FTL vs LTL: Which One Actually Fits Your Freight?
May 31, 2026 · ATQ Team

If you've ever wondered whether to book a full trailer or share one, you're asking the right question. The answer changes your cost, your transit time, and how your freight is handled.
Full Truckload (FTL)
You book the entire trailer. Choose FTL when:
- You have enough freight to fill (or nearly fill) a 53-foot trailer
- Your goods are fragile and you want fewer touches
- Timing matters — FTL usually moves point-to-point with no terminal stops
Less Than Truckload (LTL)
You share trailer space and pay for what you use. Choose LTL when:
- You're shipping a few pallets, not a full load
- You can absorb a slightly longer transit (LTL stops at terminals)
- Cost matters more than speed
A quick rule of thumb
Under about 6 pallets, LTL is usually cheaper. Above about 12, FTL often wins on both cost-per-unit and handling. In between, it's worth pricing both — which is exactly what a broker does for you.
