Cross-Border Freight Canada–U.S.: How to Keep Your Shipment Moving
June 9, 2026 · Harmanpreet Singh

Moving freight between Canada and the United States is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — parts of North American shipping. A single missing document can turn a two-day move into a week of waiting at the border.
Get the paperwork right the first time
Most cross-border delays come down to documentation. Before your freight leaves the dock, make sure you have:
- A commercial invoice with accurate values and HS codes
- A bill of lading that matches the invoice
- Any required certificate of origin (CUSMA/USMCA can lower or remove duties)
- Your customs broker's details, ready at the crossing
Know who clears what
Cross-border moves involve a customs broker on each side. Confirm early who is filing the entry — and that they have your paperwork before the truck arrives, not when it's already in line.
Build in a buffer
Even a clean shipment can hit a busy crossing. When a delivery is time-sensitive, plan the pickup a day earlier and choose a lane with predictable wait times.
The cheapest cross-border quote isn't always the fastest. Ask how a carrier handles customs, not just the rate.
At ATQ we prepare the paperwork and coordinate the clearance so your freight crosses without sitting and waiting. If you ship between Canada and the U.S., get a quote and we'll map the lane with you.
